Talented playmaker struggling for game timeFitness issues have held him backAdvised to seek out a new challengeWHAT HAPPENED?
That does not appear to be the case for the United States international at present, with the 21-year-old playmaker seeing limited game time under Edin Terzic. Reyna was absent from Dortmund’s latest matchday squad due to illness, but he has started just two games in all competitions this season.

With that in mind, former USMNT forward Charlie Davies has told of what needs to happen in Germany: “Gio Reyna has to find time to be in this team. Because he's good enough! That's for damn sure. So I don't know what is the problem. I do know, and I've been saying it for a while now, Gio Reyna's gotta move. He's gotta find a new place, a new environment, a coach that trusts him. Because to me, Terzic does not trust Gio Reyna. Given that the opportunities to play him, going back to last season, when he'd bring him in – Gio would score, then he wouldn't start the next game.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Reyna took in just 625 minutes of Bundesliga action last season, scoring seven goals and providing two assists. He has only appeared in five of Dortmund’s 13 league games in 2023-24 – making just one start – and is in danger of seeing his promising career stall.

Reyna, who has 24 senior caps for his country, is tied to a contract through to 2025. He has previously expressed a desire to prove his worth at Signal Iduna Park, but a transfer elsewhere may have to happen at some stage as his professional patience continues to be tested.
